Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea scores very high in the international market. That is simply because this highland district has been well-known in Vietnam for its hundred years of aromatic tea cultivation.

No one knows exactly what makes tea products from this land so charming like that: some attribute it to the climate, some suppose soil is the reason and some also say experienced hand of farmers create the specialty. However, those are concerned by agro-scientists or tea researchers only, and for tea drinkers in Vietnam, they care more about how they can have a hot tea pot with real Thai Nguyen tea inside, and enjoy each drop of that fragrant beverage.

  1. History of  Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea

The history of tea production in Thai Nguyen also coincides with the history of tea in Vietnam. Before 1882, tea was grown spontaneously by local famers at highland area and valleys surrounded giant mountains. At that time, half of harvested tea leaves in Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea used for drinking, and the rest was spent on processing and preserving.

In 1882, the appearance of French scientists in Thai Nguyen has brought a new breath to tea production in this area. Along with existing small tea farm, huge tea plantations were established by French with modern machine and technique that resulted in rising output. Moreover, two more new types of industrial tea which includes black tea for Western European market and Chinese green tea for Northern Africa market were grown in Thai Nguyen at the same time.

After victory of the resistance war against French colonial, the North Vietnam government has implemented some significant policies in tea production and generate new development prospects of tea in Thai Nguyen. One of them was to create national tea plantations and co-operations to grow and produce tea. That structure today has been replaced by numerous private tea gardens and tea joint stock companies.

  1. Famous tea regions in Thai Nguyen

The most famous tea from Thai Nguyen is Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea. This special product from Tan Cuong – Cong River area possesses an incredibly delicious taste that can mesmerize any tea drinkers including the most picky one. Each sip of hot Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea pouring in mouth firstly leaves a little taste of bitter on the tip of the tongue, but that taste immediately transforms to a deep sweet when the tea is off throat.

Tea is the strategic product of Thai Nguyen. Over the past 20 years, tea trees have provided high economic value and jobs for tens of thousands of labourers. Thai Nguyen tea in general Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea in particular have been household names in Vietnam since old time.

Currently, the province has nearly 1,500 hectares of tea growing area, producing 19,000 tonnes of fresh tea buds per year, generating VND180 million per hectare per year.

In recent years, various new tea areas have been established with unique and different tea products to serve customers in any range. Prominently among them are Trai Cai and Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea village, in addition to deluxe tea plantations in Phuc Thuan, Thanh Cong and Song Cau.

  1. Tea Festival Thai Nguyen – Viet Nam 2017

Under the theme “Quintessence of Vietnamese tea”, Tea Festival Thai Nguyen – Viet Nam 2017 will take place from November 26 – 28 in Thai Nguyen City with 4 main activities including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Tea Cultural Festival, Miss Tea-land Contest and other activities such as Thai Nguyen tea and Tourism Fair 2015, Exhibition of ornamental creatures, Photography Exhibition, Scientific conference for improving the quality and value of Thai Nguyen tea products, art performance, touring tea villages… Tea Festival Thai Nguyen – Viet Nam 2017 attracts participation of tea enterprises and villages in Thai Nguyen Province and other localities, international delegations from China, South Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Laos, India…

Nine cooperatives in Phuc Xuan, Phuc Triu, Tan Cuong communes, Thai Nguyen city have been granted certificates for its safe tea products, with the involvement of nearly 350 households farming on a combined area of 310 hectares.

In order to promote the Tan Cuong trademark of local tea, the Thai Nguyen provincial People’s Committee has designated the Tan Cuong Thai Nguyen tea growing area as tourism site, which spreads across six communes of Tan Cuong, Phuc Triu, Phuc Xuan, Thinh Duc, Quyet Thang and Phuc Ha.
